With the increased activity in the construction market, our Concrete Pumping division recently purchased three brand new Schwing 58X concrete pumps.  The 58 meter pumps were the first of their size to be shipped to California or Washington in the last 5 years.  They are the only long boom pumps in the area with engines that meet the latest emission standards.

Long Boom Concrete Pumps   1650 Wewatta 0002

So what exactly is a long boom pump and how does it work?  A concrete pump is attached (mounted) to a truck and uses a remote controlled, articulating robotic arm known as the boom.  It has the ability to place concrete quicker and more precisely than traditional methods.  There are some pumps that can deliver over 200 cubic yards of concrete per hour, which one of the reasons it is economical.  With the long reach of the pumps, it also eliminates much of the need to construct walkways and access points into certain areas of a project.

Here are some remarkable statistics regarding the capability of the 58 meter pump.  According to the Schwing website, the pump has a vertical reach of 187’ 9”, a horizontal reach of 175’ 1”, and a below grade reach of 141’ 1”.  It has a boom rotation of 370 degrees.  The outrigger has a 42’ 10” overall frame length and sets up quickly utilizing the exclusive Schwing patented stable platform.

The pump specifications are as impressive.  It has a concrete output of 213 cubic yards per hour and allows for a maximum aggregate size of 2.5”.   The 58 meter pump even has the option of a detachable boom that can be mounted hundreds of feet from the pump.

Coming Out of the Ground in Seattle’s Theatre District

July 1, 2013

The Holland Partner Group has come out of the ground with a new 40-story apartment building adjacent to the historic Paramount Theatre. This project, with its close proximity to Rapid Ride Transit and Seattle’s retail core, positions itself in the middle of the vibrant downtown. Upon completion this project will consist of 325 apartments, 276 parking stalls, and a restaurant and retail at the ground floor to cater to the theatre clientele.

As part of the Holland Team, Conco is performing all of the cast-in-place concrete, rebar, formwork, shotcrete and concrete pumping for this signature property. The small footprint with minimal lay-down area and five-day form cycle present challenges that require constant communication and coordination with all trades on site. Conco will be utilizing a perimeter protection system and perimeter netting system to ensure the aggressive schedule is met without jeopardizing the workplace. As of August 1, Conco is on schedule having recently completed the 12th floor. Conco will top out the project January 22, 2014.

815 Pine is designed and constructed to achieve LEED Silver status. The project is scheduled to be completed in April, 2015.

Solution

A city’s history can be told by its venerable buildings that still stand. Over time even the best built buildings succumb to time and stress. Some buildings are worth saving, but cost prohibitive. Retrofit construction costs can often exceed a budget and doom a building. The Hall of Justice renovation project in Los Angeles could have been halted if a cost-effective solution was not designed.

Massive strengthening was necessary to save the 1925-built Hall of Justice. New 24-inch thick shear walls, hammerhead-shaped boundary elements, and drag beams were critical pieces needed to save the ailing structure. These new concrete members will be joined to the existing structure by anchoring approximately 52,000 drill and epoxied dowels.

Conventional methods of placing this concrete would require that forms be erected, adding both time and cost to the project. Additional hurdles would include form material storage, and crew movement through the thirteen building levels. With all of this complexity, it became apparent that pneumatically placed concrete, also known as shotcrete, was the ideal placing method. Shotcrete will allow the construction team to almost eliminate the forming process all together. Once the reinforcing has been installed, the shotcrete can be placed. Furthermore, because shotcrete is placed without a form there are no concrete consolidation surprises.

The Hall of Justice’s structural retrofit would not have been economically possible without the use of shotcrete. Conco’s efforts during the design, its ability to execute, its robust tool set, and immense experience may have given The Hall a new lease on life. Seattle Mat Pour at The Martin

Conco’s regional office in Washington completed a 2,880 cubic yard mat pour on April 7th at The Martin–a 24-story luxury apartment tower located in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood–for general contractor Exxel Pacific.

Located downtown adjacent to Seattle’s Monorail, access and time constraints were a concern. Three pumps–36 meter, 47 meter & 58meter–were used to complete the mat pour, together pumping 450 cubic yards per hour at peak times. Cadman, Inc. delivered the ready-mix with trucks arriving approximately every 80 seconds to fill the mat which measures 7′-6″ at the deepest point.

With 2,880 cubic yards and 275 tons of rebar, The Martin stands as affirmation of Conco’s abilities and reputation.

Contract Award

Turnkey concrete package for Los Angeles Hall of Justice

L.A. Hall of Justice

The Los Angeles Hall of Justice has been closed since the magnitude 6.7 1994 Northridge earthquake. The 335,000 sq. ft. building stands 14 floors tall in L.A.’s downtown. Originally constructed in 1925, this imposing structure was meant to convey a sense of justice and public importance. The Hall was designed in the classic Italianate style and was constructed with Type I non-combustible building materials including concrete floor slabs, a steel frame structure encased in concrete, granite exterior veneer, and hollow clay tile partitions at the interior. The Hall of Justice also presented a stunning interior with an ornate, barrel-vaulted entry foyer, gold-marble walls, and large ionic columns supporting the exquisitely gilded ceiling.

Although the building was completely abandoned following the earthquake, plans to revive it have been under consideration more than a decade. To date, all hazardous materials have been abated and all interior demolition of infrastructure systems and non-bearing walls have been completed. The building has been prepared for its eventual restoration and re-occupancy as an office building. After many years of designs and budgets, Clark Construction was awarded the job in a design build competition valued at $151,000,000.00.

A key part of the reconstruction is to preserve and restore the historic features of this important structure while bringing the building up to existing seismic codes. In order to accomplish this, shotcrete will be used extensively to reinforce existing concrete walls.

Conco’s scope of work will included all shotcrete, concrete, and rebar. We are also resurfacing the entire existing floor surfaces in the Hall of Justice structure and constructing a new 9 story, 1000 car parking structure on the same site.
