Location: Tacoma, WA
Client: Washington Dept. of Transportation
General Contractor: Hamilton Construction Company
Project Cost: $300,000

The Conco Companies is providing shotcrete services for the new I-5NB HOV lane that runs from Portland Avenue to the Port of Tacoma Road in Tacoma, WA. We will be using a specialty shotcrete technique to carve a design on the shot-face of the retaining walls. By implementing this technique over a traditional cast-in-place approach, it will save the project an enormous amount of both time and labor costs. Furthermore to increase efficiency, our crews are doing all of the carving from lifts.

The full scope of the project includes widening the I-5 to make room for the HOV lane as well as the construction of a couple of bridges, the reconstruction and improvement of several interchanges along the route, and repaving all of the lanes.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-2018 and will provide motorists with numerous benefits including improving the highway’s overall safety and traffic flow as well as environmental enhancements. In addition the I-5 will receive an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) upgrade that will make it possible for WSDOT to respond more quickly to accidents and other type of incidents to help reduce traffic delays.

Cost: $10 Million

The Conco Companies is providing concrete services on “Building C,” which is a part of the Village at Totem Lake redevelopment project in Kirkland, WA. Conco’s responsibilities include concrete pumping, reinforcement, formwork, and finishing services along with our professional construction hauling services. We start work this August and expect to be finished mid-summer 2018. One particular challenge of the project is that the construction site is right next to an active shopping mall so we are carefully planning before we bring in the multiple placing booms the job requires.

The Village at Totem Lake development is expected to be finished by the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019 and will include a village commons and park, retail shops, restaurants, 850 high-end apartments, and a state-of-the-art luxury movie theater.

Update

The Tacoma Convention Center Hotel developed by Yareton Investment & Management will offer 300 rooms and retail spaces and the new Marriott branded hotel. Expected to open in 2020, the 4-star hotel will rise 23 stories, include 304 guest rooms, and will be connected to the Greater Tacoma Convention Center. It will also feature a 10,000 square foot grand ballroom, retail space, and other function rooms. The hotel will serve as the anchor hotel for the convention center, which has struggled recently to land larger convention and trade shows because of the lack of nearby hotel rooms.

The Conco Companies NW Division is working a 7-day cycle in the tower, pouring the vertical the same day as the slab is poured with a self-climbing core form system (supplied by FCI). The tower portion, consisting of the hotel, continues to L23 + a cantilevered concrete roof. The project will utilize 5,550,000 lbs. of Rebar, 25,000 cubic yards of concrete, and 430,000 linear feet of post tension cables. Conco is scheduled to pour-out the project by June 2019.

The Conco Companies will begin work on the new Tacoma Convention Center Hotel in August 2017 and we expect our part of the project to be completed in early 2019. The $20 million mixed-use development which adjoins the Greater Tacoma Trade and Convention Center and will include condominium and retail space in addition to a 300-room Marriott Hotel. Ankrom Moisan Architects designed the new building to enhance the conference amenities currently available in the city, which will include a 10,000 sq. ft. grand ballroom and 9,000 sq. ft. of other function rooms within the hotel.

Conco’s extensive services include concrete pumping, reinforcement, formwork, shotcrete, and finishing. As the project will be the largest one in the city, Conco was selected for the job due to our extensive portfolio of big projects as well as our ability to handle an aggressive schedule.   In fact, one of our first projects in the Northwest was the Tacoma Marriott Hotel in 2004, which is located across the street from the new job site. Scheduled to open in the summer of 2019, the high-rise will be the second tallest building in the city.
