The Conco Companies is contributing various concrete services to the Arts Complex building at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. The 350-seat theater will provide the opportunity for students to further explore and develop their interests in the arts before college. The new auditorium features an exposed concrete thrust stage, a type of stage the extends into the audience with seating around three sides of the stage. This unique design required careful planning and precise execution to create the stage and surrounding seatings’ flooring. Conco worked to carefully plan the dimensions of the areas onsite and execution of the different stages in setting, pouring and perfecting the concrete of these fundamental pieces of the auditorium.

Conco began working on the project in September 2017 and responsibilities include providing concrete formwork, concrete pumping, concrete finishing and shotcrete services for the project. Conco was selected for this project among a select groups of contractors due to their vast array of concrete services, particularly formwork, pumping, shotcrete as well as cast in place vertical and horizontal concrete construction. With difficult project constraints such as a compact construction site next to the school’s playing fields that make planning and on-time execution essential, Conco’s vast experience and concrete services made them the leading candidate for the project. Conco’s work on the project is expected to be completed in April 2018.

Structural Engineer:  Saiful-Bouquet / Buehler & Buehler
Project Size:  750,000-square-feet

The Conco Companies is providing a full range of concrete services for the Midfield Satellite Concourse North and the Baggage Optimization Project (BOP) that are part of a new addition to LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT).

Conco’s responsibilities for the new five-level Concourse and BOP includes concrete pumping, reinforcement, and formwork.  In addition we will provide the project’s outlying areas with concrete reinforcement, formwork and shotcrete services.  On the extensive tunnels, our crews will expertly handle the concrete finishing.  During the course of the project, Conco will also offer design assistance to help ensure the best finished product.

The Concourse will have 12 new aircraft gates as well as restrooms, retail and concession spaces, and be connected to the TBIT by a 1,000-foot-long pedestrian tunnel and utility tunnel.  The project also features 1.5 million square feet of new aircraft apron and taxiways/taxilanes along with underground utility improvements that support the new gates and baggage processing capacity.

The Midfield Satellite Concourse terminal is expected to achieve LEED Silver certification and to meet the CAL Green Tier 1 requirements with sustainable features such as a “cool roof,” water-saving fixtures, and energy-saving operations.  The $1.6 billion project broke ground February 27, 2017 and is scheduled for completion sometime at the end of 2019.

Location: Century City, CA
Development Company: Crescent Heights
Architect: Handel Architects
General Contractor: Swinerton Builders
Interior Design: Shamir Shah Design
Project Cost: $300 million

The Conco Companies recently provided concrete services for Ten Thousand, a very luxurious residential tower that is on track to become one of the area’s iconic architectural landmarks. Named for its street address, 10000 Santa Monica Boulevard, the recently opened 483-foot, 40-story apartment tower is located in Century City at the border of Beverly Hills. The project was the creation of Crescent Heights, a real estate development company based in Miami Beach, Florida. The architect was Handel Architects and the interior design was done by Shamir Shah Design. The general contractor was Swinerton Builders.

According to the architects, the building’s angular glass-sheathed facade was inspired by the work of 20th-century modernists and seamlessly and elegantly intertwines the indoors to the outdoors. The exterior’s multiple panes of glass are slightly angled away from one another to refract sunlight during the day and transform the tower into an illuminated beacon at night.

The tower’s sloping roofline stands out in sharp contrast to the surrounding flat-roofed buildings, and balconies create sharp angles along the north and south facades. The building offers an on-site garage, 75,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities including an indoor and outdoor pool, and a house staff of 60 to carry out the 5-Star hotel-style services. Ten Thousand offers a sustainable living environment, and is LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Indio-Detention-Center-Conco-Commercial-Concrete.jpg

The Conco Companies are providing the structural concrete services for Riverside County’s East County Detention Center (ECDC) located in Indio, California. The 516,000 sq. ft. project is a replacement and expansion to the existing Indio Jail Facility and is being constructed in two phases. The project consists of a three-story support building with a connecting tunnel to a four-story structure containing two housing units and mezzanine levels.

Conco’s responsibilities include supplying and performing services totaling 55,000 cubic yards of concrete. The four-level housing units are stacked in two separate “pods” and will be constructed of cast-in-place concrete as will the support building. We are also utilizing our pumps to pour piles 60’ below ground-level for Becho, another trade partner. Final completion of the project is expected in December, 2017.

One of the project’s unique challenges is that the temperatures in Indio average 89°F and summer highs can reach 120°F. Crew safety becomes even more critical in this environment.   We will have a full-time safety manager on site and the 100+ Conco employees and Conco subcontracted employees are adhering to ACI’s Hot Weather Concreting procedures.
