Auditorium - Art Complex Cathedral High School - The Conco Companies

The Conco Companies is finishing its work on a new 350 seat theater in Los Angeles. The Arts Complex at Cathedral High School will include an exposed concrete thrust stage and seating area. The thrust stage will extend into the seating area with the audience surrounding three sides of the stage. Conco leveraged its experience to successfully plan and execute the concrete strategy for these fundamental pieces of the auditorium.

Cathedral High School was founded in 1925 by Archbishop John J. Cantwell as the first Los Angeles Archdiocesan high school. The school now enrolls over 700 students, 70% of which use financial aid or academic scholarships to meet the cost of tuition and fees. The school has had tremendous success, with up to 80% of graduates admitted to four-year colleges and universities as well as alumni throughout the community in government, business and education roles. The school launched its Arts’ Matter Campaign to help expand its facilities to include a new Arts Complex at the high school, providing students greater opportunities to develop their interest and skills in the arts as young people.

Conco began working on the project in September 2017 and responsibilities include providing concrete formwork, concrete pumping, concrete finishing and shotcrete services for the project. Conco was selected for this project among a select groups of contractors due to our vast array of concrete services, particularly formwork, pumping, shotcrete, and cast in place concrete, which included both vertical and horizontal construction. Difficult project constraints such as a compact construction site next to the school’s playing fields, making planning and on-time execution essential.  Conco’s vast experience made us the leading candidate for the project. Conco’s work on the project is expected to be completed in April 2018.

The Conco Companies is one of the leading concrete contractors in the Western U.S. and offer a wide range of quality services and products.  Our experience includes providing services for commercial, educational, parking and other construction development as well as public works projects.  We serve California, Washington State, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada.

Project Rendering from Hudson Pacific Properties

The Conco Companies is providing a variety of concrete services for the new 13 story Epic Tower in Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. The project is being developed by owner Hudson Pacific Properties and was designed by Gensler architects, who also recently collaborated on the nearby ICON tower.  The general contractor is Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company and the structural engineer is Nabih-Yousef and Associates.

The project is a 280,000 Sq. Ft. office tower with 18,400 Sq. Ft of new retail space. The building also includes 27,000 Sq. Ft. of inspiring landscaped terraces, providing a seamless transition to outside workspaces through tall glass walls that overlook the city of Los Angeles.  The project is targeting a LEED Gold certification, incorporating bike-parking, a fitness center as well as a ‘landing pad’ for drones.

Conco was selected for this project because of our experience and commitment to high quality planning and execution on complex projects. With Conco’s expertise, the Epic Tower will be the first building in Los Angeles to feature 15 foot, low-profile concrete ceilings. Conco began work on the high-profile project in December of 2017 and completion is anticipated for March 2019. This timeline reflects the challenges of working in a growing neighborhood with high-traffic volume limiting site access and work hours. Conco is providing concrete finishing, concrete pumping, concrete formwork, and shotcrete services for the Epic Tower.

Once completed the Epic Tower will provide additional parking, retail and high-end office space to the neighborhood. The innovative tiered design of the Epic Tower is expected to draw more leading creative companies to Hollywood’s central district and its vibrant community.

Conco is one of the foremost suppliers of concrete services for the Western U.S. We got our start in 1959 in the Bay Area by offering clients the best value on a broad range of concrete services and products.  Since that time, we have taken a leading role as top concrete contractors in the region. LA Memorial Coliseum Renovation - The Conco Companies

Project rendering from DLR Group
The Conco Companies is providing a range of concrete services for the renovation of the historic Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles.  As a host venue for the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans football team, two Olympics, two Super Bowls, and a World Series, this iconic stadium is undergoing the largest renovation in its 95 year history to prepare for the 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles. The 270 million dollar upgrade includes an eight-story modern structure with press boxes and luxury suites as well as new lighting, updated audio, WiFi and video scoreboards.

Along with the renovations, USC, which manages the stadium on lease from the city and county of Los Angeles, announced a 16 year naming rights deal with United Airlines. The stadium’s name will change to United Airlines Memorial Stadium when the renovations finish in August 2019 . “Together with United, we can ensure the Coliseum’s future as a world-class venue and true community asset,” said USC President C. L. Max Nikias at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The project is being developed by the DLR Group with architect David Sakaguchi and general contractors Hathaway-Dinwiddie and Hunt-AECOM.  Conco, selected for this project because of their previous stadium experience and working relationship with Hathaway-Dinwiddie and Hunt-AECOM, is providing concrete finishing, concrete pumping, concrete formwork, construction trucking and shotcrete services.

The LA Coliseum is a high-profile project that includes a number of unique challenges requiring Conco’s experience in planning and executing complex projects. This included the difficult task of staging the construction in such a fashion as to not impede the 2018 and 2019 football seasons of both the USC Trojans and LA Rams. Conco provided a forward-thinking plan to meet the demanding schedule, and our experienced team is looking forward to the challenge of modernizing the stadium.

The Conco Companies is very sad to announce the passing of co-founder Matt Gonsalves.

Mathew William Gonsalves passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, February 15, 2018, in Walnut Creek, California. Matt was born in Oakland, California to Matheus and Mary Gonsalves on September 7, 1930. Matt graduated from Castlemont High School in Oakland, California in 1948, where he served as the Student Body President during his senior year. He married his high school sweetheart, Marlene, on June 10, 1950. They were married for 65 years. Matt was a proud member of The United States Airforce from 1952 to 1953. Matt and Marlene moved to Concord, California in 1954 where they raised their three children Steve, Karen, and Janice.

In 1959, Matt founded Conco Cement Company with his two brothers, Will and Mel, along with his two high school friends, Gerald and Ray Santucci. That company is known today as The Conco Companies. Conco has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Matt have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Matt’s spirit will forever be the foundation of Conco.

Matt made many contributions to the construction industry. To improve the quality of slab foundations, Matt pioneered the use of 10″ to 12″ MAT slabs that are less prone to crack or bend with expanding soils or other earth movement. These thicker slab foundations are used today by contractors throughout Northern California.  He invented the Waffle-Mat System in which concrete is poured over plastic molds to create a waffle-type mat especially effective on expansive soils. He was very excited about Confoam.

In 2000 Matt was inducted into the California Home Building Hall of Fame.

We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much. Matt lived a life of open hearted generosity, of love & care for all who met him – be it for an hour, a day, or a lifetime – teaching us how to live well through his example.

Matt enjoyed his Wednesday Golf/Card day, as well as golf on Saturday and Sunday, and his monthly poker nights. As his health declined, he would meet his high school friends every Saturday for lunch instead of golf. He always looked forward to his annual Memorial Day weekend trip to Lake Tahoe as well as his annual President’s Day weekend trip to Cabo San Lucas. He was an Oakland Raider season ticket holder for years and still cheered them on win or lose.

We will miss him dearly.  We are deeply grateful for the role that he played in building this great company and his service to the community.
