The former Riverside Continuation High School not only has a brand new building, but it also has a new name.  As part of the Pittsburg Unified School District in Pittsburg, CA, the new Black Diamond High School opened its doors to students in time for the start of the new 2012 school year.  It is an alternative school that serves students in grades 9-12 that are ages 16 to 18 years old.

Conco Rebar Fabrication

The old Riverside High School building was in a deteriorated state when the decision was made to totally replace the structure with a new 34,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility.  The contractor for the project was Broward Builders, Inc. and the architect was California Design West.  The building was engineered by Buehler and Buehler Structural Engineers.  Conco was brought in to provide concrete services on the new structure.

The project was completed in slightly under a year from the groundbreaking in August of 2011.  The construction team worked diligently throughout the project to effectively meet all timelines and to stay on budget.   According to California Design West, the new campus features a steel framed building and walls that are a brick/CMU veneer.  There is a large, enclosed courtyard tastefully landscaped and clerestory windows in the breezeway.

In total, the building has 19 general classrooms and two special education rooms, an up-to-date media center, and a large multipurpose/cafeteria complete with a prep kitchen. Furthermore the new school was provided with a designated area for a child development program with its own outdoor playground.  Conco recognizes that while this was not one of our large-sized or well-known projects, we are proud of our continued commitment to provide exemplary concrete services that enhance and benefit our communities.

Conco’s team of professional concrete contractors in the Portland area brings the highest level of integrity and principles to each project from pre-construction to finish.  With the rapidly growing construction market, Conco is taking an active role in the Portland area with our expansion of high-quality commercial concrete services.

Conco has had the privilege to be a part of many high-profile projects throughout our long history.  Recently we had the opportunity to provide concrete services for the renowned Sandler Neurosciences Lab and Research Center, on the UCSF’s Mission Bay Campus.  The 5-story building is now home to the world’s leading clinical and research programs seeking cures for neurological disorders.  The total cost for the 237,000-square-foot, state-of-the art facility was $200 million and completed just last year.

The project contractor was the Clark Construction Group, and was designed and engineered by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill, LLP.  Clark describes the building as featuring flexible design elements that consists of curtained walls, metal panels and precast concrete walls.  The foundation has over 400 structural support piles that go down 130 feet below ground to rest on bedrock.  The building meets and exceeds all seismic stability requirements and was designed to be highly energy efficient.  With all of its many attributes, it has been awarded the LEED-silver certification.

According to UCSF, the Center along with the nearby Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Hall has presented opportunities for collaboration with Silicon Valley, the biotech industry and the pharmaceutical industry.  The Sandler is the proud to have a Nobel Prize recipient as well as many top researchers and scientists from around the world.  “This culminates a 10-year dream,” says Nobel laureate Stanley B. Prusiner, MD, director of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, one of the programs that are housed in the building. “This building will bring together some of the best scientists in the world to work on these very prevalent diseases of the brain. The opportunity for major progress is tremendous.”

Another interesting project that Conco has been involved in recently is the renovation of the Los Angeles Hall of Justice.  The building, which was constructed in 1925, is a perfect example of how smart solutions were necessary to save the project.  Our collective expertise, experience and cost-effective techniques were put to good use.

The building was heavily damaged, and consequently completely abandoned after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.  Plans for the renovation had been discussed for many years before anything happened.  Finally the County of Los Angeles awarded Clark Construction Group California along with design partner AC Martin the Hall of Justice Repair and Reuse Project.  Work began in early 2012 and is expected to be completed sometime in 2014.

Conco’s scope of work includes all of the shotcrete, concrete, and rebar.  We are also resurfacing the entire existing floor surfaces in the Hall of Justice’s structure and constructing a new 9 story, 1,000 car parking structure on the same site.

Using shotcrete means the walls can be constructed faster and with less material to save both time and money, which is exactly what the renovation of the Hall of Justice needed.  It is the method of applying concrete pneumatically through a high pressure nozzle and offers an economic advantage over typical cast-in-place concrete with reduced forming needed.  The structural retrofit would have been economically impossible without the use of shotcrete.

The L.A. Hall of Justice has a rich history with all sorts of interesting and notorious visitors that have come through the doors.  According to Wikipedia, the building was used in scenes on Perry Mason, Dragnet, and Get Smart.  For years, it was the primary county jail housing such infamous prisoners as Charles Mason and Sirhan Sirhan.  A cell block that includes the area where Charles Manson’s was kept will be left as a new interpretive center.

Conco is a leading supplier of concrete services for the Western United States.  As one of the leading commercial concrete contractors in the San Jose area, we have been involved with large-scale projects in the area including the Mineta Airport.  Our concrete services include commercial, educational, parking and other construction development as well as public works projects and highways.

While we have built our reputation on concrete work for large-sized and notable projects, we have also been a part of smaller jobs that are just as important to those who benefit.  A commuter bike connection was sorely needed to link two major roads in Novato, CA. to give bike riders a safe alternative to riding along the side of a very busy freeway.

Enfrente Pathway - Novato - Conco Shotcrete

Opened in Dec of 2011, the beautiful Enfrente Pathway is a 0.6-mile, multi-use trail that is completely separated from cars and provides a critical link to central and south Novato. The project was made possible by a grant of $1.95 million from the federal government and is a part of the Non-Motorized Transportation Pilot Program for Marin County.  The contractor was Ghilotti Construction and the engineer was SOHA Engineers.

Conco’s expert concrete services were used to help with the construction of the path.   The project required installation of soil nails used to retain the hillside.  Sculpted shotcrete was applied as a finish over the soil nail walls.   Once the walls were constructed, the area was graded in preparation for the paving of the concrete pathway.   A concrete retaining wall was constructed at one end of the project and a concrete barrier was built at the other end.  For added safety, fencing was also put up along the path.

Now that the connector is complete and offers a safer route, the hope is that more cyclists will opt to ride to work, which will help to reduce traffic and create less greenhouse gas emissions.  Conco is pleased to have been a part of a project that enhances the lives of those in the Novato area and helps to keep cyclists and pedestrians safe.

Conco is one of the leading concrete contractors in San Francisco offering a range of innovative, quality servicesWe have been honored to work on many high-profile projects and were recently awarded the concrete package for the San Francisco 49ers Stadium.  Our concrete services include commercial, educational, parking and other construction development as well as public works projects.

Conco’s participation in a $72 million project, The Riverfront, in downtown Napa, CA. is another prime example of our vast portfolio and range of concrete services.  The Venetian-style building is a mixed-use development of 50 residential condos, 30,000 sq. ft. of office space, and 40,000 sq. ft. of retail.

792 Napa Riverfront - Conco Concrete Pumping

The 1.3 acre-property with Napa River frontage was completed in 2009 and includes a 2-levels subterranean parking structure capable of accommodating 229 vehicles.  Channel Properties is the owner of the project, architect was Johnson Lyman Architects and the general contractor was Ledcor Builders, Inc.

Napa resident and president of Channel Properties, Mike DeSimoni, Sr., was raised in Europe and wanted the property to “reflect not only the look but the land-use philosophy, now known in the U.S. as new urbanism.”   The desire was to create an area where people could live, work, and shop in the downtown area.

One of the biggest challenges to the project was to address the underground parking structure, which would be situated below the water table.   Structural engineering firms lead by Peoples Associates designed a solution to construct “a pumping station to reduce the hydrostatic pressure and not require a foundation that resists uplift forces due to buoyancy.”  The creative solution saved the project a considerable amount of money.

The Riverfront retail area has become a mecca for foodies and high-end restaurants.  Morimoto Napa Restaurant and Lounge is a 7,500 sq. ft. sushi bar owned by celebrity chef, Masaharu Morimoto of Iron Chef America fame.  The Fish Story, a Lark Creek Restaurant Group, is a sustainable seafood restaurant.  Another well-known Food Network star, Tyler Florence, operates a 2,500 sq. ft. rotisserie style eatery.  Also Napa’s visitor information center is now located in the complex.

Conco is one of the leading commercial concrete contractors in Sacramento and has been delivering first-rate services in the area since 1959.  We are experts at creating cost-effective solutions that take advantage of the most up-to-date techniques.  Our concrete services include commercial, educational, parking and other construction development as well as public works projects and highways.
