The Conco Companies is proud to announce that the new “LA Federal Court House” project in downtown Los Angeles has won the “2016 Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Concrete Construction” award presented by the Southern California ACI chapter.

Furthermore, the project has also been selected by the committee to compete at the national level at the 2017 ACI National convention, which will be hosted in Anaheim, CA.

The floating Cube

The project, also called by the Angelinos “The floating Cube” was designed to address the federal government’s blast and set-back requirements, which gives it its unique cantilevered look. We would like to thank our partners at Clark Construction and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill design group for their forward thinking on design, innovation, and coordination needed on this new Los Angeles landmark.

Stay Tuned as the project competes at the 2017 ACI National Convention!

The Conco Companies is providing concrete services for The Mark, a 48-story high-rise tower in Seattle, WA that will consist of 528,000 sq. ft. of Class A+ office space, as well as a luxurious 189-room SLS hotel and spa. Conveniently located in the city’s central business district, the stunning beautifully designed tower will incorporate a wide range of “green” building features such as rain water management, photovoltaic glass and light pollution reduction. Scheduled for completion in April, 2017, the tower will bring to the area first-class office space that is highly divisible and offers 9’ 6” windows for natural light and spectacular views.

Concrete Pumping - The Mark

The 5,000 cubic yard mat foundation pour was completed in June, 2015 and required approximately 500 truckloads of concrete over the course of the day. The project also includes a sub-level parking structure comprised of shotcrete perimeter walls and a concrete elevator core. As of May 2016, Levels 5-11 decks have been poured and the core poured to Level 35. When the elevator core reaches Level 35, the remainder of the building steel will be erected in one continuous phase.

The building’s unique geometric facade provides exterior seismic bracing for structural safety as well as column-free floor plates. Unobstructed by columns or bracing, the 13’ 6” floor-to-floor heights will allow for individualized, open plans or heavy build-outs. The Mark is seeking LEED Gold Certification.

The SLS hotel will be a collaborative effort from the Founder and CEO Sam Nazarian, renowned designer Philippe Starck, and chef James Beard. The hotel will also include 15,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, a 5,000 sq. ft. ballroom, sky lounge and two restaurants. Adjacent to the SLS Hotel are two historic buildings. A century-old sanctuary building, the First United Methodist Church, and the Rainier Club. Founded in 1888, the Rainer Club has occupied their current building since 1904.

The reality is that tight construction schedules demand coordination between building trades if a project is to be successful. With the recent uptick in building activity, this task has become increasingly more difficult for both the developer and the general contractor.

In order to alleviate such scheduling difficulties, a simple solution that The Conco Companies provides is to be a single source alternative to our customers. When working with Conco, a GC can make one call and get high-quality, formwork, rebar, place and finish, shotcrete and pumping services all in one place.

The advantages of this approach are clear. As business improves, companies are stretched thin as subcontractors must move their crews between several different projects. A single day delay by one subcontractor can delay the work of others by a week or more as each subcontractor has committed crews and resources to other projects. With Conco’s approach of working as a coordinated team, it allows us to anticipate and respond to any problems with formwork, shotcrete or rebar by shuffling crews to accommodate our customers.

Nowhere is the need as critical as with concrete and rebar. Concrete cannot be poured until rebar is complete and demanding schedules mandate minimal delay between rebar inspection and pouring concrete. When one company controls both aspects, the chances of success are greatly increased. Some key benefits of a combined solution include:

  1. Joint management of rebar and concrete generates a holistic approach where decisions are made based on the best end result
  2. Ability to manage crane time between concrete and rebar tasks
  3. Coordination of trades to keep projects on schedule
  4. Joint collaboration between concrete and rebar that identifies opportunities for improvement in design
  5. Reduction of equipment on projects as forklifts, hydro cranes, and power tools are shared between concrete and rebar
  6. Eliminate disputes over scope issues between concrete and rebar and the management time necessary to settle those disputes
  7. Reduce unnecessary paperwork and charges between trades that add no value to a project

The Conco Companies, through Conco Reinforcement and Conco’s Concrete Division, is structured to meet all the concrete needs of a project. We bring decades of experience to provide unsurpassed services to our customers.
