The Conco Companies own and operate two large rebar fabrication facilities in Benicia, CA and Rochester, WA.  Conco is the largest independent reinforcing steel contractor on the west coast. In our core markets on the west coast there has been a sizable increase in the number of projects coming out of the ground and being contemplated in the future.  In order to meet the needs of a growing market, we have spent significant capital to increase our capacity at each of our facilities.

Our newest facility in Rochester, WA (half way between Seattle, WA and Portland, OR) was built in 2008.  Recent upgrades will serve to double the capacity of the plant by adding a second shear line, a new overhead crane and a new #14 rebar bender.

In Benicia, an additional overhead crane was purchased and installed and new state of the art auto benders were bought.  A straight bar automatic bender (Barwiser) and a Coil 16 bender were bought from Schnell.  These upgrades will serve to substantially increase our production capacity at this facility as well.

Furthermore, at both facilities additional stock inventory has been procured and more field fabrication tools such as a new coupler system from Dextra called Bartec have been deployed to give our crews the best equipment to complete a quality job.

By investing in our facilities, Conco is now in a position to better serve a growing market for the public works projects, high technology campuses and other expanding construction markets throughout the western United States. Conco Pumping has taken delivery of three brand new Schwing 58X concrete pumps.

New 58M PumpWe purchased the 58 meters as our customers have been asking us to provide them with long boom pumps that meet the latest emissions standards.

Gary Brandt, Vice President of Marketing for Conco Pumping.

The 58 meter pumps are the first of this size to be shipped in California or Washington in the last 5 years making them the only long boom pumps that have engines which meet the latest emission standards. Conco has also placed an order for several 20, 39 and 47 meter pumps along with a couple new Telebelts.

With the uptick in construction activity and the heightened emphasis on reducing emissions on jobsites, it is anticipated that these pumps will be busy for years to come.

All of us who have spent many years in the construction industry have seen unprecedented challenges brought on by the last five years.  Construction activity dropped in all markets serviced by Conco with the worst markets off by nearly 80% from their peak.  As the U.S. economy fell into a recession, the construction industry dropped into a depression.

Recently, general signs have pointed to a marked improvement in construction activity throughout the western United States.  The amount of work secured by Conco has increased dramatically with new projects in the planning stages being announced every week.

With this renewed optimism, Conco has embarked on a plan to put itself in a position to meet the needs of a growing construction market.  We have made significant capital investments in our facilities and equipment so that we can best serve our customer base.

Furthermore, Conco has expanded its geographic footprint by opening an office in Denver, CO and has taken a more active role bidding and securing work in Portland, OR.  This newsletter will give you an overview of some of the actions taken by Conco to meet the needs of the construction industry.  With the infusion of private money into projects, we are bullish that the worst is behind us and recent gains can be sustained in the near future.
